The head of the local teachers union is challenging Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator when it comes to arming educators.

Jackie Lansdale is the President of Red River United, the union representing teachers in Bossier and Caddo parishes.

She believes giving teachers guns isn’t the right way to keep classrooms safe.

“It doesn’t address the violent society.  The glorification of violence, the glorification of school shootings such as with Columbine. It doesn’t address any of those things.”

Lansdale says the focus should be on mental health and detecting students who are in need of help.

“Giving a teacher a glock does not take away all of those concerns that we have in the field of education.  If anything it’s callous to think that, that’s where we should be going as opposed to caring about boys and girls.”
